Cycle hangars are fixed storage lockers designed to hold up to six standard sized bicycles and about the size of one car-parking space. People can rent a space in a hangar, which can only be accessed by lock and key (or on an app in some locations). It typically costs between £45-60 per year to rent a space.
The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority recently secured funding to install 80 cycle hangars across the region. In November 2023, the Combined Authority held a consultation to find out where local communities felt new cycle hangars would be best located, and were delighted to receive nearly 900 responses.
Every piece of feedback, along with additional information from previous engagements, is currently under careful consideration. The upcoming challenge involves determining where the new cycle hangars should be placed. One all the feedback has been evaluated, the Mayoral Combined Authority will liaise with local councils, and provide them with a list of potential sites. On-site inspections will be conducted by the councils to assess suitability. Bristol City Council are the first to announce their shortlist of 48 potential locations for new cycle hangars across the city. You can find the shortlist on the Bristol City Council website: https://news.bristol.gov.uk/press-releases/365a9745-6a08-4f98-b99a-1aeeb206148a/bristol-streets-to-be-notified-they-are-on-the-shortlist-for-a-cycle-hangar
Please note: The final decision about whether a cycle hangar can be installed at a particular location belongs to local councils in their role as the local Highways Authority.
As soon as local councils have made their decisions and the new cycle hangars locations are confirmed, the Mayoral Combined Authority will publish that information on this page. If you signed up for updates as part of the consultation, you will be notified directly.
