But to make the most of this greener technology we must make sure more people can access charge points.

Where do you want to see charge points for electric vehicles?

The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority has secured £6.6 million from the Department for Transport to help provide electric vehicle charge points for residents without off-street parking and create a regional charge point network. This will be boosted with match funding through partnerships with private companies that will install and manage the charge points.

There is an increasing need for charge points in residential places where there is no off-street parking. As well as for busy shopping areas and service stations, we also need to see charge points at GP surgeries, schools, in our local streets and other destinations. Electric vehicles need to become a more practical choice. The goal is to create a network of charge points that are convenient, accessible, and strategically located throughout our region. This is where you come in. You know your local area and can help identify where new charge points would have the greatest impact.

The Department for Transport’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund supports local authorities in England to provide electric vehicle charge points for residents without off-street parking. It seeks to encourage more people to use electric vehicles by providing convenient and accessible charging options for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The fund provides money to construct the charge points, and to make sure that that dedicated staff can plan and deliver local electric vehicle charge points.

This project is crucial for supporting the transition to electric vehicles, which are better for the environment, the economy and individuals. With a better network of charge points, more people will be able to choose to use electric cars, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced and dependence on fossil fuels decreased, and air quality will improve.

The West of England Combined Authority is leading and coordinating the region’s WESTcharge project for the roll out of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

-There are several different types of charge points with different speeds. The main focus will be 7kw charge points, which are suitable for residential, workplace, and public parking areas. These can be located on lamp posts, or bollards.
-We will also fund a smaller number of 22kw and 50kw DC chargers, which provide rapid charging for long-distance travel in high-demand locations. These offer higher power charging for shorter periods of time between 30 mins and 4 hours.

We need to find private charge point operators (CPOs) who will match-fund and install the charge points, and we will do this through a competitive tender process in Summer 2024. The West of England Combined Authority is leading on this with Bath & North East Somerset Council and South Gloucestershire Council.
Bristol City Council is delivering charge points in partnership with Bristol City LEAP.
A contract is expected to be awarded Autumn 2024.

All the locations will be reviewed for their suitability and those that are selected will be used in the tender and allow the CPOs to price their bids based on the charge points that are most needed.

We anticipate charge points should begin to be delivered in 2025.
