What are social tariffs?

You could save around £200 a year on your broadband bill (source: Ofcom). Social tariffs are cheaper broadband and mobile phone packages, available to people receiving certain benefits, including Universal Credit and Pension Credit.

They work in exactly the same way as a standard broadband or mobile package – through the same providers, with the same service – just at a lower monthly cost. They can help you stay connected to work, education, health services, benefits, family and everyday online services.

Who may be eligible?

You’re likely to be eligible if you receive a benefit such as:

  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

Eligibility varies by provider - some also include benefits such as Personal Independence Payment or Attendance Allowance. Check directly with your provider to confirm.

Important things to know

  • Social tariffs are real broadband/mobile packages offered by major providers
  • They are usually cheaper than standard packages
  • Most tariffs offer fast, reliable broadband - speeds over 30 Mbit/s are common, suitable for streaming, video calls and everyday browsing
  • You can usually switch to a social tariff without penalty, even if you're mid-contract
  • In many cases, you can stay with your existing provider rather than switching elsewhere
