Union Learn West enables HGV driver to study in their own time
Community has received funding from the MPSF Mayoral Priority Skills Fund to establish the Union Learn West project (ULWp) aimed at supporting those currently in employment across the West of England region to develop further learning and skills that will support them with in-work progression, or retrain while remaining in employment.
RG is currently employed as an HGV Driver for a logistics firm and has been with his current employer for six years. He heard about our ULW project as we visited his workplace and was speaking to workers across the site about the courses and training that is available for them to access.
Having completed his IOSH course over fifteen years ago with a previous employer he was keen to enrol in the NEBOSH course through Community’s E-Careers provider. We supported RG in choosing the self-paced learning option which allows him to study for the course in his own time. Choosing this self-paced study option allows RG to balance family, work, and a busy social life outside of the workplace.
NEBOSH is something I’d always wanted to do in Health and Safety, and this course will give opportunities to open doors I’m not currently able to access.
As an experienced HGV driver, RG reflected on where he would be without the support to access this course, and he says that studying NEBOSH “gives me more options within the business. As someone who likes to challenge himself, this is my chance to step up and progress in my career. I can look towards a promotion in the future”.
What is the Mayoral Priority Skills Fund (MPSF)
The Mayoral Priority Skills Fund provides flexible grant funding to meet current priority skills gaps in the region. These priorities have been identified through robust intelligence gathered through delivery of previous and existing programmes, data, reports and gaps identified through Skills Connect.
