Storm Consultancy, a digital technology agency based in Bath, has created 'Co-forest' which offers local companies the opportunity to sponsor plots of land on which native, locally sourced trees are planted.
The Bee Bold selection panel commended Storm Consultancy on delivering an innovative and significant tree-planting project for pollinators which is outside of their normal day-to-day business, as well as their ambition to work with more SMEs in the future.
1
00:00:01,120 --> 00:00:03,000
So I’m Katrina Kelly and I'm a
2
00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:05,440
forester and one of the co-founders of Co-forest.
3
00:00:05,680 --> 00:00:09,080
so Co-forest is a community tree planting project,
4
00:00:09,200 --> 00:00:11,680
but specifically around the business community.
5
00:00:12,120 --> 00:00:14,920
So we bring company owners together
6
00:00:14,920 --> 00:00:17,320
and they fund parts of the forest,
7
00:00:17,560 --> 00:00:18,880
and then we buy
8
00:00:18,880 --> 00:00:19,440
the land,
9
00:00:19,440 --> 00:00:20,320
plant the forest,
10
00:00:20,320 --> 00:00:23,400
and try to make sure it is as biodiverse
11
00:00:23,400 --> 00:00:25,520
and as native as possible.
12
00:00:25,520 --> 00:00:28,520
So my husband runs a company called Storm
13
00:00:28,680 --> 00:00:29,840
Storm’s a tech company.
14
00:00:29,840 --> 00:00:31,960
They build websites, they handle data,
15
00:00:32,520 --> 00:00:34,400
they've got a team based in Bath
16
00:00:34,400 --> 00:00:36,480
and they've been there for about 13 years now.
17
00:00:36,600 --> 00:00:37,800
And for their 10th anniversary,
18
00:00:37,800 --> 00:00:39,000
they wanted to do something
19
00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:41,160
that would leave an impact and a legacy.
20
00:00:41,600 --> 00:00:43,360
So we talked about lots of options
21
00:00:43,360 --> 00:00:44,960
and one of those was to plant trees.
22
00:00:44,960 --> 00:00:46,280
When we started talking to Storm’s
23
00:00:46,280 --> 00:00:48,000
clients, they all wanted to join in.
24
00:00:49,680 --> 00:00:52,640
All of the volunteers who come get taught about
25
00:00:52,920 --> 00:00:54,240
how we’re constructing the woodland
26
00:00:54,240 --> 00:00:56,120
and why we're using different species,
27
00:00:56,120 --> 00:00:57,240
what that does in terms
28
00:00:57,240 --> 00:00:59,840
of pollinators and biodiversity more generally,
29
00:01:00,240 --> 00:01:02,520
and what that does in terms of the resilience
30
00:01:02,520 --> 00:01:05,840
of the woodland for future pests and diseases as well.
31
00:01:08,400 --> 00:01:09,440
I think the biggest impact
32
00:01:09,440 --> 00:01:10,200
this project's had for
33
00:01:10,200 --> 00:01:10,720
the companies
34
00:01:10,720 --> 00:01:14,760
involved is around their understanding of the crisis
35
00:01:14,760 --> 00:01:16,880
we have in this country around biodiversity
36
00:01:17,640 --> 00:01:20,320
and the role that they can play in addressing that.
37
00:01:20,320 --> 00:01:21,120
So organisations
38
00:01:21,120 --> 00:01:23,360
nearly always approach us talking about carbon
39
00:01:23,360 --> 00:01:25,760
when they want to get involved in Co-forest.
40
00:01:25,760 --> 00:01:26,920
We try to talk to them
41
00:01:26,920 --> 00:01:28,640
about other ways of cutting their carbon
42
00:01:28,640 --> 00:01:30,040
rather than offset it,
43
00:01:30,040 --> 00:01:31,720
and we talk to them a lot about the need
44
00:01:31,720 --> 00:01:33,480
for more biodiversity in Britain
45
00:01:33,480 --> 00:01:34,160
and access
46
00:01:34,160 --> 00:01:35,800
to green space for people,
47
00:01:35,800 --> 00:01:37,160
and that's what Co-forest
48
00:01:37,160 --> 00:01:38,800
helps them give to the community.
49
00:01:38,800 --> 00:01:40,800
So they start talking about carbon
50
00:01:40,800 --> 00:01:41,960
and they usually leave talking
51
00:01:41,960 --> 00:01:43,480
about what they're doing for biodiversity
52
00:01:43,480 --> 00:01:44,920
and for people in the local area.
Storm Consultancy celebrated its 10th anniversary by launching a tree planting project 'Co-forest'. The project gives local companies the chance to sponsor plots of land on which it plants native, locally sourced trees and commits to their future management for biodiversity and people.
By working with 37 companies, Storm Consultancy purchased 10 acres of land in Almondsbury, South Gloucestershire. Staff from the sponsoring companies, as well as over 100 members of the public took part in tree planting days.
Storm Consultancy is also active with schools, businesses and local community groups and is working to secure a second site in the B&NES area for tree planting, nature conservation and public engagement.
Storm Consultancy engages with local businesses at all levels, with their founder, David, speaking at various events to highlight Co-forest and the UK's nature crisis.
By providing a model for companies to invest in local biodiversity, it also provides other benefits for their staff and local people by providing access to green spaces to support mental and physical wellbeing, and volunteering opportunities.
Volunteers at the tree planting days have the opportunity to learn about tree planting, the importance of creating native, mixed-species woodlands, leaving open glades to encourage pollinators like butterflies, and later to encourage standing deadwood and multi-age woodland development to support biodiversity.
Woodlands, and in particular open woodland areas and edge habitats, are important for pollinators such as moths, butterflies and hoverflies as they provide safe refuges all year round and also provide food sources for the different life stages thanks to the range of nectar-producing trees and plants.
By planting and creating woodland areas, Storm Consultancy is helping to provide great pollinator habitats in the West of England.
