Go Green Widcombe are a community group working with Retrofit West CIC and the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) to promote retrofit to homeowners in Bath and the surrounding areas. They are part of the Widcombe Association and are made up of volunteers who want to help people play their part in reducing their carbon footprint, focusing on energy efficiency of residents’ homes in the area.
“Our aim is to help local [homeowners] on their journey to become more sustainable.”
Community groups across the West of England can access grant funding for upskilling and developing their own retrofit services. This funding is provided by the West of England Combined Authority via Retrofit West CIC.
As a recipient of one of these grants, Go Green Widcombe have been able to expand their activity, by hosting several talks and workshops focused on retrofit. These talks are promoting the Retrofit West Advice Service, showing homeowners how they can embark on their retrofit journey in a simple and supported way.
Homeowners are walked through the process in an easy to understand sequence, including aspects such as:
After the talk, one to one ‘surgeries’ are also held, providing the opportunity for individuals to discuss their potential retrofit journey with an expert, and to get signed up with Retrofit West CIC.
Steve from Go Green Widcombe stated “Grants have enabled us to have talks…about retrofit to help people on their retrofit journey, because we all want to proceed to net zero.”
Existing community networks are a critical method of engaging homeowners in retrofit, linking up individuals with the Advice Service which is helping people plan, design, and deliver energy efficient home improvement measures.
“The benefit of having local community groups like Go Green Widcombe is that…we are the conduit which takes all [Retrofit West’s] input, information, and links they can provide, and feeds that out into our community.”

Go Green Widcombe will be running more talks later this year, continuing their vital work engaging homeowners in the Bath area on retrofit.
Further grants of up to £20,000 to help upskill, develop and inform communities about home energy efficiency are available via Retrofit West CIC.
For other community groups interested in this opportunity, applications for Round 2 of the Community Groups Grant Funding are now live and close on September 4th, 2024. There may also be further opportunities for funding through future rounds.
