Renewable Energy Case Study: SIFFFT

Wind turbine

In 2023, Bristol Energy Network (BEN) and Community Power Solutions (CPS) launched the SIFFFT (Sustainable Innovative Financial Foundations for Turbines) project. This is an ambitious project to create a replicable model for community-owned onshore wind energy that can act as a catalyst for transformative change. The project builds on the success and lessons of the Ambition Community Energy (ACE) wind turbine in Lawrence Weston, aiming to deliver similar schemes across the region.

1. The Opportunity

The project aims to identify a pipeline of suitable sites for development of new onshore wind projects in the region, with communities directly benefiting. The SIFFFT project delivery team are managing the development of these projects from their initial high-risk phases. This includes technical and environmental assessment, negotiating contracts, navigating grid connection, right through to construction, into operation, and supporting the transfer of ownership of completed project to the local community.

By working closely with the local councils in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristo,l and South Gloucestershire on site identification and planning requirements, this renewable energy project provides vital financial benefits in rental value for local councils, with profits from energy generation going back into the local communities.

Alongside the technical feasibility and development work the SIFFFT team have been carrying out, BEN have been engaging with community groups and organisations, helping South Gloucestershire groups such as Emerson and Lyde Community Energy. Creating these relationships is critical to build trust and to make sure that the community are advocates for the future wind turbine sites and that the social and economic benefits align with local needs and priorities.

The community engagement work is linking effectively with associated regional energy projects helping to amplify opportunities for participation, including Retrofit West Advice Service, Green Open Homes and Mission Net Zero.

2. Funding

This project is funded by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority through a £1.5 million award from its Green Recovery Fund. Once projects are developed to the appropriate stage, external investment can be unlocked for investment.
