Pupil power in action at Schools Summit 2024

Huge crowd of students pose for a photo

Year 10s from across the West of England region gathered at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol – the iconic home to Bristol City and Bristol Bears – for the second West of England Schools Summit hosted by Metro Mayor Dan Norris in March 2024.

They were joined by event sponsors Deloitte, Atkins, and Aecom – as well as delivery partners UWE, Boomsatsuma, and others.

Real pupil power in action

Around 30 students also got to pitch their policy ideas directly to Mayor Norris and his expert panel of business leaders in the Dragon’s Den session. On issues from period poverty to knife crime and youth services, the students demonstrated a clear understanding of the challenges with innovate ideas on how to tackle them.

Many of the students received support and training from UWE ahead of the event, helping them present their ideas even more effectively with a clear focus on solutions.

The ideas from the young people will directly feed into West of England Mayoral Combined Authority policy and the students involved will be kept up to date on how their ideas are being translated into reality.

“I’ve been blown away once again by the creativity and talent of the young people who came to my Schools Summit. The Summit was all about asking young people what they want the future of the West of England to look like – and there were so many ideas to take away. Now it’s my job and the job of my West of England Mayoral Combined Authority to turn those ideas into action.”

A buzzing marketspace

At the marketspace, the pupils got to meet with key employers from across the region, learn about the skills they will need to take up some of the jobs of the future, and learn more about the help and support that is available to them as they move into the world of work. Making career choices is a daunting prospect for young people and the Schools Summit was about giving them that extra confidence and solid foundation to succeed.

What did the young people think?

"After today, by just coming here, I've found out something. Life is really moving forward, like over there the dog that is just made out of technology. That's our future and I would like to say I love how our future is panning out. There might be some bad stuff, but I say the good is looking pretty good right now.” - Attending student

What do our partners think?

“The region has a fantastic, diverse range of young talent and it is important that this talent has early access to business and policy makers, to not only understand some of the exciting career opportunities that exist right on their doorstep, but the challenges businesses face. Retaining talent within the region is essential and the Summit is the perfect introduction to the world of work, providing those who attended with essential life skills and insight into how the future is shaped through collaboration and partnerships.” - David Tansley, Partner and Vice-Chairman of Deloitte North & South Europe Board
