Based in Bradley Stoke, North Bristol, Pentagon Play design, manufacture and install playground and outdoor learning facilities for schools and nurseries. "The business focuses on developing learning and play environments for children of today to make the world a better place for the adults of tomorrow."
For Managing Director of Pentagon Play, James Collis-Pritchard, the challenge was simple: “We were looking to make our premises as green as possible for our own carbon footprint, to reduce emissions, ensure a safe and comfortable workplace for our employees, and reduce our costs.”
After getting a Carbon Survey, James believed the installation of LED lights would improve working conditions, as well as contributing to substantial energy savings by improving the company’s energy efficiency. As part of this project, occupancy sensors could also be installed. “The sensors will save money as they will ensure that people don’t have to remember to turn off lights as this will be automatic.”
Pentagon Play received a £3,000 Green Business Grant from the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority to replace existing fluorescent lighting with LED panels in their building. The selected products have integrated occupancy sensors built into them which means the lights will automatically switch off in areas not being used, minimising the amount of electricity used for lighting. The estimated impact of the work was:
"The LED Lights have made the building more efficient while also reducing our carbon footprint. This has made our business more sustainable and saved costs."
James not only noticed improved energy savings, but also improved staff comfort through better lighting quality. He found that, “they were happy with the improvements and made the office a more comfortable workplace.”
Having already felt the benefits from this project in their warehouse, Pentagon Play are now looking to change the lighting in the rest of their premises. They are also investing in electric vehicles and charging points.
“If all businesses made small changes, it could have a big impact in the region.”
