Natural Vitality is a small producer of organic houmous, based south of Bath in the Somerset countryside. As well as being distributed by organic food delivery services, their products are also sold in specialist retailers under their own brand ‘The Precious Pea.’
Since they took on the business in 2014 Mark and his team have been driven to incorporate more sustainable practices and energy sources into their everyday business operations. This has seen them become an accredited B Corp in the last few months.
“The main motivation was to reduce our environmental footprint and to walk the walk with regard to climate change and alternative energy sources.”
Natural Vitality were awarded a £15,000 Green Business Grant from the Combined Authority to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof of their production units, providing a peak output of 35kWp when the sun is shining. The estimated impact of carrying out this work was:
Mark is “delighted with the impact that the solar panels have and continue to bring.” Just three weeks after installing the solar panels, Mark had noticed a significant reduction in energy bills, with energy consumption going down approximately 40%.
As well as the solar panels, Natural Vitality also replaced an inefficient fan heater in their office with an infrared radiant panel heater, as recommended in their Carbon Survey. Instead of heating air, radiant heaters are much more efficient by directly heating the person nearby, reducing heating energy by around 80%.
One of the main benefits to the installed works included greater staff engagement and customer satisfaction. “Our staff are proud to be doing their bit, at work, for the environment.” This increased engagement was also said to coincide with happier customers, lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.
Having taken a big step toward their goal of becoming a carbon neutral houmous provider, Natural Vitality plans to continue making more sustainable improvements to their business operations.
For Mark, a main challenge for the future involves the removal of single-use plastic packaging, with research to find alternatives taking place with delivery partners. Mark has even explored the possibility of using reusable glass pots for branded houmous.
