Founded by Kate Ploughman in 2007, Kate’s Kitchen is a catering company providing food to a wide range of clients, ranging from local to national businesses, individual events, weddings and the workplace. For over 17 years Kate’s Kitchen have been buying local, organic produce when possible, using in-season ingredients for their meals, supporting the local area and promoting sustainability.

“We believe in local, seasonal food that doesn’t cost the earth.”

Taking action

Kate’s Kitchen were awarded a £10,200 Green Business Grant to replace their single glazing and install solar panels on their roof. The installation of double glazing has improved the building’s ability to retain heat, reducing the demand for supplementary heating appliances.

“The double glazing has certainly improved the temperature of the office, increasing staff comfort.”

Solar panels were also installed to generate free electricity on site, likely to pay itself back in 3 to 4 years, reducing carbon emissions of electricity consumption. They already use electric vans for their deliveries, which can now be charged using surplus electricity from the solar panels, reducing running costs.

  • Over £1,800 annual savings on energy bills
  • Around a 20% reduction in electricity use
  • 3 tCO2e annual reduction in carbon emissions

CO2e savings calculated using BEIS Conversion Factors 2017. Energy costs calculated from BEIS Energy and Emissions Projections 2018, using 2020 retail prices. West of England Green Business Grants 2019-2023 is funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund and the West of England Combined Authority’s Recovery Fund.
