John Perkins Construction: sustainability built in
This award-winning construction company are industry leaders in green practices, starting with their own office.
A smaller footprint starts at home
From their office in Bristol, John Perkins delivers a portfolio of projects across South West England ranging from new build to refurbishment and restoration. Proud of their Bristol roots, the company works closely with a strong local supply chain and employs local people wherever possible.
As experts in the built environment, the team are acutely aware that construction is one of the UK’s highest-emitting industries. Determined to do what they can to manage their own carbon footprint, they have set a target of net zero carbon emissions from their office by 2030.
Turning insight into action
Exploring what help might be available to support their ambitions, the company discovered the opportunity for a Mayoral Combined Authority grant. Using the findings from a Carbon Survey to evidence the benefits in their application, they were able to secure a Green Business Grant of £8,000 towards their plan.
The grant was invested in a series of building improvements: rooftop solar panels, improved ceiling insulation, and LED ceiling lights for their ground floor space which is let out as a workshop. Together, these improvements have delivered impressive results, cutting annual carbon emissions by almost seven tonnes.
Sustainability pays
Since the improvements, office staff say the building is warmer in winter and cooler in summer, making it a far more comfortable place to be. And crucially, the upgrades are delivering financial benefits too, with estimated savings of £3,600 per year on energy bills.
John Perkins is now taking the step of installing a separate electricity meter for their tenant. This will allow for more accurate tracking of energy use and support further reductions in the future.
Aside from the notable environmental benefits, in this difficult economic climate following a green journey can still achieve financial savings – repaying the investment through lower bills.
