Ashley Community Housing (ACH) and Babassa’s UNLOCK programme equips refugees and young people from underrepresented groups with information, advice and guidance to take up training and employment opportunities.

A key aspect of the programme is supporting development of sector-specific skills in industries with labour shortages (e.g. HGV driving or Health and Social Care) to maximise suitability in areas of growing employment opportunities.

Sam and has been an Asylum Seeker for 8 months. He lives in central Bristol and lives with his family who have all come from El Salvador. Through the Unlock programme Sam has attended several courses including soft skills workshops, information advice and guidance (AAG) and health and social care.

When asked how the project has helped him, Sam replied “Being able to leave the house and do courses has given me a sense of purpose. Doing courses with ACH has opened the door to other opportunities available to me”

Through the support of the programme, Sam was able to make further connections with charities and is now doing a traineeship with a teacher.
