Jacqui Ham is the drama teacher at Acting Out theatre education company. Acting Out have been running drama workshops, classes, and shows at community centres and schools across the city in Bristol since 2013. They promote emotional well-being through drama, offering workshops filled with improvisation imagination and fun.
Jacqui applied for a creative sector grant for freelancers, and was awarded £3,000.
Jacqui applied for a Combined Authority creative freelancer grant as she wanted to expand her business and undertake professional development. During lockdown and afterwards for along time, all theatre or drama activities were unable to run and Jacqui felt like she had to start her business again.
Jacqui said, "I have used the grant to employ other freelancers to run Shakespeare workshops and to offer free spaces to children/young people who have not engaged with Shakespeare and/or drama workshops before ."
Thanks to the grant it has enabled Jacqui to run workshops in areas of the city that ordinarily Acting Out wouldn’t have been able to engage with communities and children in those areas. Acting out has been able to build relationships with new schools and teachers.
"The Combined Authority has been very supportive, which will help me to grow my partnerships with schools and to develop my own practice with different age groups. The grant has been essential in helping me to grow my business." Jacqui concluded.
