A Strategic Place Partnership

Established a Strategic Place Partnership with Homes England to support the region’s housing and regeneration ambitions. A joint business plan will see £1m invested to drive forward strategically important developments, including a proposed zero-carbon community of over 3,000 homes at Hicks Gate and the St Philips Marsh Masterplan at the Bristol Temple Quarter development.

Renovating Hengrove Park

Work has begun on the first homes at Hengrove Park, one of the region’s largest regeneration projects. The first phase has delivered 53 new council homes, including 27 homes for social rent and 26 shared ownership properties.

Supported by Mayoral Combined Authority funding, Hengrove Park will provide up to 1,435 new homes once complete, with up to 50% affordable housing. The development will create a vibrant new community, featuring a 22-hectare public park, sports and community facilities, retail, commercial and office space, alongside excellent access to local amenities including a leisure centre, hospital, and further and higher education college.

£45m secured for housing

Secured £45m from the Brownfield Housing Fund in the first ever allocation of its kind for the region. This funding will help proposals to redevelop previously used land for housing, accelerating the delivery of high-quality, well-connected and affordable homes for local people.

Spatial Development Strategy

Started work on a 30-year Spatial Development Strategy, alongside plans for a Strategic Planning Board with North Somerset Council. Guiding how the West of England will grow in coming decades, the strategy will consider how we build the right homes in the right places, support local jobs and businesses, and how best to protect nature and respond to a changing climate.

Tackling rough sleeping

Secured £12.3m to tackle rough sleeping as part of the Prime Minister’s plan for everyone to have a route off the streets by Christmas.

"Rough sleeping is devastating at any time of year, but the winter months can be particularly challenging. I'm pleased that this new funding will help provide a safe, warm place for people who need it most.” Helen Godwin – Mayor of the West of England

Unlocking land for new homes

Became the national delivery partner for the Small Sites Aggregator pilot, securing £6.5m in government funding to use smaller plots of council-owned land to develop new homes for social rent. Targeting urban areas with severe social housing shortages, the pilot will help to tackle the housing and temporary accommodation crisis and aims to deliver around 1,000 new homes across 60 sites in Bristol, Sheffield and Lewisham.

Accelerated the process of replacing cladding on high-risk buildings, with the support of a grant of almost £870k from government.

Funding will help to fix historic safety issues on high and mid-rise residential buildings.

Focus on: Brabazon and West Innovation Arc

Working with Government and regional partners, we have developed plans for a new town at Brabazon and West Innovation Arc - launching our first Mayoral Development Zone in South Gloucestershire and north Bristol.

The proposals could deliver up to 40,000 new homes and 40,000 new jobs over the coming decades, supported by major transport, innovation and infrastructure investment. The project could deliver up to £20bn economic benefit by expanding one of the highest-performing parts of the country, generating high-value jobs and increasing the region’s productivity.

The former Filton Airfield is already being transformed into Brabazon – a new 380-acre town and vibrant community of affordable housing and commercial space with 500 homes already built and moved into. The West Innovation Arc site will stretch from Brabazon around to Bristol Parkway station and the Bristol & Bath Science Park, and will include up to a further 6,000 homes, three new schools, a major new park and the 20,000-capacity Aviva Arena.

We need to work together to tackle the housing crisis, deliver growth, and protect our planet. I know that leaders across the region share these priorities. We need to build the right homes in the right places, with the services and infrastructure that people need and deserve.

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England

Brabazon is already demonstrating what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together with a shared long-term vision. We are investing billions of pounds to create a thriving new community, and the opportunity to deliver a nationally significant new town is both real and achievable.
