Delivering growth for the West
Impact Report 2026
In September 2025 we launched the West of England Growth Strategy, setting out our plans to deliver the growth our region needs over the next decade.
This report sets out the progress and successes we and our partners have achieved in the past year towards improving people’s lives right across the region.
A year ago, we launched our Growth Strategy, and we talked really ambitiously about what we want to do here in the West of England over the next 10 years. And I'm pleased to say that just a year on, we are well on our way to changing this region and making this region sustainable economically in a way that supports all of us. Growth is never just about numbers. It's about how people feel about their place and a sense of optimism that this place that they call home is gonna deliver for them and also for their families and for future generations. So over the past year, we focused on transport. We knew that that was one of our big barriers to growth. We're working hard to get five new railway stations open and, of course, get the frequency of the trains to support that. We're really making progress around mass transit, and as always, we are prioritising our bus network and making sure that that works for everyone, supported by an active travel network that allows us to travel sustainably and healthily. We're also constantly thinking about how we attract inward investment and how we bring businesses into our region. We know the sectors we want to focus on, and we need to make sure that people know that we're ready and open for business, and we've got the spaces and the talent to support that. We're working hard to think about how we promote adult skills, both for people coming back into the workplace or people that are looking to prepare themselves for a new world of work. And as well as that, we are absolutely committed to being the first NEET Zero region. I don't think any of our young people should be not in education, employment, and training. The West of England has so much to offer, and we're gonna work really, really hard to make sure that everyone can see a place for themselves and an opportunity for themselves to thrive. And we need to build more houses. We have two incredible regeneration sites in Brabazon and the West Innovation Arc and also Bristol Temple Quarter, as well as really exciting work happening all across the region in the Somer Valley, in North Somerset, and around Bristol city centre. We've got sites around Hengrove and also the Western Harbour work that's coming through. So it's gonna take time, but we're making great progress, and I know that working with the partners that we've got all across our region, whether it's businesses, universities, schools, colleges, and of course our council partners, we are really making progress. And I look forward to celebrating what we've achieved so far but also what we'll take into the future.

Working together
We're working with partners to unlock new powers, funding and opportunities.
Achieved Established Mayoral Strategic Authority status after a successful application to Government. This will unlock new powers, funding opportunities and enhanced financial flexibility for the region with reduced red tape. This includes access to multi-year funding packages and more authority over local public services, transport, housing, skills and investment infrastructure.
Progressed the expansion of the Mayoral Combined Authority, with North Somerset Council voting to join in May 2026. Council members were supportive of the expansion after a public consultation showed 57% of respondents were in favour. Government has committed to including the expanded geography in future funding, on top of £15m already secured to support important regional projects.
Image credit: YTL Developed an Investment Plan to deliver the Growth Strategy - setting out a strategic portfolio of activity for long-term economic transformation, job creation and improved regional connectivity. The plan directs early programme and project development and further strengthens the way we plan our investments.
Continued progressing our new operating model after a Local Government Association review found that this is “essential” for maintaining momentum. The new operating model will set a framework for our operations to ensure alignment with strategic priorities, enhanced efficiency and value for money.
Improved our Performance Management and Reporting processes to help us achieve a more consistent approach to managing and reporting on organisational performance.
Celebrating our region
We’re proud of the work our partners are doing to make the West even better.
Bristol City Council and the Mayoral Combined Authority celebrated a major milestone in March 2026. For decades, Temple Island remained derelict, constrained by contamination, outdated infrastructure and challenging ground conditions. The enabling works now completed have unlocked the site's potential in the heart of the city.
Three new or expanded school-based nurseries are set to open from September, giving more families access to high-quality childcare through a second wave of government funding. The additional places in Withywood, Bradley Stoke and Weston-super-Mare will help parents return to work, take on more hours, and better balance family life.
The West celebrated the award-winning series Rivals as season two premiered on Disney+. Filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, with 95% of location shooting taking place within a 30-mile radius, the Hulu Original is helping showcase the West of England to audiences around the world.
The Bristol Music Fund's A Ticket to the Future won Best Music Policy at the 2026 Music Cities Awards. The community-led approach proposes a 1% contribution from music event ticket sales to create a community-owned fund, giving the region's music sector a direct role in how funding is governed and distributed.
A new further education and sixth form colleges partnership was created with the launch of Colleges West, improving opportunities for more than 50,000 learners each year. The partnership will play a key role in relation to skills on the regional Business Board.
After a 23-year absence, daily direct train services between Bristol, Bath and Oxford made a welcome return in May 2026. Trains run between Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa and Oxford every two hours, with quick journey times of just over an hour.
More than 100 new jobs have been created as OHB Space UK expanded its base in the West of England to support the biggest mission to Venus in the history of space exploration. In a contract worth £20m, OHB Space UK will be responsible for the assembly, integration and testing of the EnVision spacecraft for the European Space Agency.
The Fashion Museum in Bath has secured a £7.2m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which will help showcase more of its renowned collection than ever before. A major pre-opening programme will focus on skills development for local people wanting to explore careers in the UK's creative industries.
Delivering the Growth Strategy in the West of England
We want to transform our region, growing the economy and improving lives across the West of England.
The next decade will see the West of England change. Growth will mean more job opportunities, new homes, an injection in pace and investment in the transformation of our transport network and the strengthening of those relationships that will help us deliver.
In 10 years, the action in this strategy will deliver tangible change and improve the lives of the people who call this region home.
