Across our region, 67,550 children are growing up in poverty and often it’s hidden.

They could fill Ashton Gate, the Memorial Stadium, Twerton Park, the Bath Rec – at the same time – and there would still be 5,000 more children waiting outside. In an average 30-pupil classroom, around eight kids are living in poverty here: in one of the richest regions, in one of the most developed countries that the world has ever known.

We want to be the best place in the world for children to grow up and families to thrive

We can’t claim to be this unless we tackle child poverty. Using our position as a thriving and productive region with an exciting future economy, we will use all the levers available to us to lift families and children out of poverty, to protect families who are experiencing poverty, and to prevent children from being in poverty in the first place.

Read our plan for tackling this entrenched, daily reality for children.

The West of England’s child poverty action plan is the first of its kind and follows on from Helen Godwin’s successful campaign to highlight the needs of children in poverty. Helen deserves widespread support for her leadership, and compassion towards the children in her region, as she introduces these very welcome, new policies.
