The next meeting of the West of England Joint Committee will consider allocating £6m for a new South Bristol Construction Centre, based at City of Bristol College.
This would offer construction skills training to around 850 learners over the first 3 years, through Higher Apprenticeships and more traditional learning routes, providing much-needed skilled workers for the city and wider region. The Construction Centre development would provide a brand new training facility on the doorstep of the College’s South Bristol Skills Academy. The project was earmarked for approval a year ago, and it is now recommended that funding is allocated pending approval of full business case.
The Joint Committee, which will meet at 1pm on Friday June 1, at City Hall in Bristol, is the decision-making body for issues relating to the West of England Combined Authority, Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire councils, and the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
The committee will also discuss allocating £50,000 over two years to co-fund, with the Careers and Enterprise Company, a new enterprise co-ordinator to work with the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and Local Enterprise Partnership. The co-ordinator would work with schools, colleges, and businesses to ensure children and young people get early and relevant careers advice and work experience. There are currently two co-ordinators working across Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire – bringing in a third will ensure that all schools in the region have the opportunity to get involved.
There will be an update on the Joint Local Transport Plan (JLTP). This will set out the vision for transport investment in the West of England until 2036, outlining strategic schemes and policies to promote cleaner and greener transport whilst supporting economic growth and improving accessibility. A six-week public consultation on the JLTP will take place in October and November.
